Manufacture of a Sawhorse using Hand tools  for my Building Construction  Industry Trades Organization qualification.

In term 1 2021 I learnt how to use hand tools to manufacture a Saw Horse to a specific size from a set of drawings . This took about 6 weeks (24 hrs) I will explain how to make a saw horse in this blog post

This project was made by using hand tools only. No powered tools were used apart from a battery powered drill to drill the holes for the screws.

I enjoyed … measuring out the dimensions and marking it out…………. the most

I found ……that planing the angle on the legs of to fit in ……….the most difficult part. I overcame this by……using a 15degree angle bit of wood to set the leg at the same angle each time…………………….

To make a saw horse I carried out the following processes.

Use Identify/describe explain to provide evidence .Please highlight the tools used , how to use the correctly and t any safety tips for tools or any checks to prevent errors.

• Marking out the top.

in this photo i was marking the top out using a ruler and a a sliding bevel unfortunately i was unable to take a photo 

• Cutting the joints

• in this photo i was cutting out the joint using a saw to cut the joint in to sections to allow me to chisel the joint out. After this we smoothed it out using the chisel to smooth the joint this process was repeated this process for the other 3 joints

tools used in the work

 Carpenters pencil a carpenters pencil is flat to stop in rolling away 

Marking guage a marking gauge is used to mark a piece of wood using a metal spike . you rest the edge of the wood on the wooden block that can be moved up and down the shaft to a custom length to scribe a line 

Sliding bevel

A sliding bevel is used to mark a angle consistently  it length can also be adjusted for different depths on the wood it is also known as a false square because duplicate angle with out the  angles being at right angles 

Combination square 

A combination square is has a preset 90 and 45 degree square that slides up and down a ruler that can be used for marking depth  and height to make sure something is level you can also you th spirt level

Engineers squarea engineers square , also known as a try square  . the engineers square is used to mark a straight line perpendicular  to the edge of the work  this is used to make sure you work has a straight 90 angle 

Tenon saw. a tenon saw is a back saw designed to rip the wood for cross grain cuts 

vicea  vice is used to hold you work in place so you can keep it still while being able to work on to the vices uses a screw to  clamp the work together

Plane a plane removes a layer of wood to make it flat or to get the wood down to a desired thickness

Timber in NZ 

Start it as a word doc. You will be copying and paste into a blog There are 5 parts .

Explain  with a graphic the different parts of a tree’

Show and explain the different parts of the cross section of a trunk.

Briefly explain how trees become timber1.the tree is cut down 

2. The branches are cut off

3. The  wood  is cut into lumber 

4.the wood is fully dried 

5. Then the wood is cut to its final dimensions 

6.then the wood is ready to be sold

Describe explain the different types of cut ( eg  quarter sawn) quarter sawn is when the log  is cut up in to quarters and then cut at 90 degrees 

Give an example of defects in timber Knot: A knot is a naturally-occurring defect in a piece of wood. Knots are circular imperfections caused by a broken-off tree branch. knots may fall out and leave a holewood can also rot and decay this breaks down the this makes the wood lose its strength this is normally caused by moisture

Give examples of timber used in NZ  pine is commonly used in the timber industry in newzealand another example of timber that is used in new zealand is the different types of beech trees there is black beech, red beech, silver beech, hard beech mountain beech  these woods are normaly used for decorative reasons and they all have strong and durable heart wood

 in science we made model volcanos and used elephant toothpaste as lava

Method:

1. get 25ml of hydrogen peroxide

2. put it in the bottle then add food colouring and a squirt of soap

3. get 15ml of warm water and add 3 spatula of potassium iodide 

4. mix the warm water and potassium iodide 

5. when ready put warm water and potassium iodide ind with hydrogen peroxide and watch.

DTE XBOX 360 project

 so far in dte we whave been working on fixing and modify an xbox 360 . so far we have come up with our plan  and our concept design we have remove the dust and completely dissembled it .

we plan on cutting a hole in it hydro dipping it and attaching it to a monitor and making it a semi portable all in 1 Xbox setup.

to far we have fixed the software issuse with the xbox once we had done that we cleaned the dust off once we did that we removed the motherboard from the frame because we were going to hydro dip the frame but we have changed our plan to hydro dip the case and add led lighting and also hydro dip the monitor . we have started cut some of the cover out so that you can see the inner workings we also  plan on making so you can see the disc as it spins

What is tap and die used for in Engineering 

A tap and die are use for cutting threads in or onto a piece of metal

TAP

When would you use a tap for a thread 

You would use a tap for a internal thread inside of a hole

Does the hole need to be bigger or smaller , explain why .

When tapping a thread the hole that is being tapped needs to be smaller than the tap because when tapping  material is being removed from the inside of the hole forming the thread

What are the different types of tap ( taper, intermediate, bottoming) explain the difference between them 

a taper tap is a tap that is tapered so that you can ease in to cutting the threads.

a Bottoming tap has next to no taper because it is designed to thread all the way to the bottom of the tap

a intermediate tap has between 3-5 tapered threads that is more than a bottoming tap and less than a taper tap

Die

When would you use a Die for a thread 

you would use a die for making the external part of the thread

Does the Bar need to be bigger or smaller , explain why .

The Bar has to be larger than the die because you are cutting in to the bar and not add material to the outside of the bar.

some die's you can use on a lathe and some that you have to turn by hand

making a jersey in textiles using a commercial pattern out of sweatshirting material

In textiles I have been making a jersey using a commercial pattern and replicating the commercial. pattern
so far I have traced the commercial pattern on to a piece of paper then cut the pattern out so it can be trace on to my sweatshirting material . I have now pinned my pattern and cut out some of the pieces .

I need to finish cutting the rest of my pieces out then put it together

• 7) running away from the soldiers

• Testing the transistor radio, they’re planning going back to Wirrawee organising the base in “hell”, and finding the hermit’s hut.

• They only think two of the soldiers were killed by the ride on lawn mower and two were just ran over 
• Chapter 18- Caitlin: Ellie talks about her status with lee and she talks about how they’re relationship has progressed. They’re planning their mission to get back at the soldiers.
• Chapter 19 ian - they were hiding in the bushes patrolling the bridge and planning how to destroy the bridge..

• Chapter 22/Epilogue pᴉʌɐⱭ - talked about a bridge exploding, seen Corrie shot, Kevin leaves with Corrie to take her to the hospital, they said their goodbyes and went back down to ‘Hell’. Kevin could have made up a story to where they was hiding, corrie got hit, they need to stay together

She drove the tanker under the bridge which could have scratched the top of the tanker and created sparks that could have fallen in the gasoline and exploded them and the bridge when they didn’t want it to. Describe at least one challenge faced by a character or individual in the written text. Explain how this challenge helped you to understand the character or individual. 

In Tomorrow when the War Began, an important character is Ellie. One of the challenges she faced was blowing up the bridge. It is a challenge because they didn’t know about all the things which could have gone wrong, there are a lot of risks involved like being shot, being blown up.n being seen or captured by the enemy. This challenge helped me understand Ellie because her actions and planning showed she had matured over the story, she was  brave because she had to run through gunfire. The plan with the truck shows she is not afraid to go out on a limb and hope for the best and will act to save her friends and country. As the reader I was amazed by her courage as it would be a very scary experience. 

She will risk a limb for one of her friends and her lifeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

She will protect her friends for any cost

She likes to help friends and others

She feels sorrow for the enemy even though they almosted killz her
