some info about it

Students will work together with scientists, environmental experts and a diverse range of leaders and other like-minded students throughout the week to help them develop strong leadership skills while learning about topical environmental issues and how these can be tackled.

Participation, adventure and learning are all key requirements for delegates. They will take part in environmental and marine science activities and visit businesses and local organisations to learn about what they are doing to reduce their impact on the environment.

tools used in the work

 Carpenters pencil a carpenters pencil is flat to stop in rolling away 


Marking guage a marking gauge is used to mark a piece of wood using a metal spike . you rest the edge of the wood on the wooden block that can be moved up and down the shaft to a custom length to scribe a line 

Sliding bevel

A sliding bevel is used to mark a angle consistently  it length can also be adjusted for different depths on the wood it is also known as a false square because duplicate angle with out the  angles being at right angles 

Combination square 

A combination square is has a preset 90 and 45 degree square that slides up and down a ruler that can be used for marking depth  and height to make sure something is level you can also you th spirt level

Engineers squarea engineers square , also known as a try square  . the engineers square is used to mark a straight line perpendicular  to the edge of the work  this is used to make sure you work has a straight 90 angle 



Tenon saw. a tenon saw is a back saw designed to rip the wood for cross grain cuts 


vicea  vice is used to hold you work in place so you can keep it still while being able to work on to the vices uses a screw to  clamp the work together

Plane a plane removes a layer of wood to make it flat or to get the wood down to a desired thickness

about differnt timbers

 Task for this week Week 2 (11/2/2021) 


Timber in NZ 


Start it as a word doc. You will be copying and paste into a blog There are 5 parts .


Explain  with a graphic the different parts of a tree’


Show and explain the different parts of the cross section of a trunk.


Briefly explain how trees become timber1.the tree is cut down 

2. The branches are cut off

3. The  wood  is cut into lumber 

4.the wood is fully dried 

5. Then the wood is cut to its final dimensions 

6.then the wood is ready to be sold



Describe explain the different types of cut ( eg  quarter sawn) quarter sawn is when the log  is cut up in to quarters and then cut at 90 degrees 


Give an example of defects in timber Knot: A knot is a naturally-occurring defect in a piece of wood. Knots are circular imperfections caused by a broken-off tree branch. knots may fall out and leave a holewood can also rot and decay this breaks down the this makes the wood lose its strength this is normally caused by moisture


Give examples of timber used in NZ  pine is commonly used in the timber industry in newzealand another example of timber that is used in new zealand is the different types of beech trees there is black beech, red beech, silver beech, hard beech mountain beech  these woods are normaly used for decorative reasons and they all have strong and durable heart wood
